The Rt. Rev’d Michael Lewis

The Rt. Rev'd Michael Lewis Born in Hampshire in 1953, he read Oriental Studies and then, as a second degree, Theology at Merton College Oxford and at Cuddesdon Theological College.After ordination in 1978 he served successively as a curate, a college chaplain, and a parish priest in South London in the Diocese of Southwark, before becoming team rector, rural dean, and finally canon in the Diocese of Worcester, where he also chaired the synodical House of Clergy and the Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches.From 1999 to 2007 he was Bishop of Middleton, a large, mainly urban area from the centre of Manchester to the top of the Pennines.  He was Warden of Readers and Lay Eucharistic Assistants and chaired the Board of Education.  Nationally his responsibilities included church colleges and universities and higher education generally, and latterly he was a governing trustee of St Michael’s Theological College, Llandaff, in the Church in Wales.Bishop Michael remains Bishop-Visitor to the Sisters of the Love of God, an Anglican community of nuns at Fairacres Convent in Oxford.  He is a member of the International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue, and a board member of the al Amana Interfaith Centre in the Sultanate of Oman.Bishop Michael and Julia have three children, Paul, Eleanor, and George, and a grandson, Jacob.

Chris Butt was installed as Dean in October 2009. After studying geography at university, he taught for two years including one year in Kenya. He has been in parish ministry in a variety of places and contexts, most recently as Team Rector of Parish of South Gillingham in Kent in the UK. For nine years prior to that, he was Rector of Bowness-on-Windermere in the English Lake District. In the 1980’s he served for seven years in Hong Kong as Chaplain of St John’s Cathedral, with particular responsibility for Emmanuel Church, Pokfulam.He is married to Tricia, who was brought up in Australia. She has worked as an occupational therapist and has studied theology and contemporary art theory and has always been actively involved in both children’s and music ministry.They have three adult daughters: Alexandra (who is married to Dan), Hannah and Philippa.

Stephen Thanapaul belongs to the Church of South India. He has been in the pastoral ministry since 1992. He worked as Bishop’s Chaplain for 5 years since 1993. He underwent a special training for nine months in the Seamen’s Church Institute in Port Newark in New Jersey and New York, USA.After returning to his Diocese, he worked as chaplain to the Truck Drivers. He had some training in some ports in the UK and worked as Chaplain for Mission Seafarers in port Tuticorin, South India from 2002 to 2009.He was licensed on the 13th of Feb 2010 in Cyprus by the Bishop, Michael Lewis and is at St Christopher’s Cathedral as the Assistant Chaplain. He also does the ministry for the seafarers being the Chaplain for the Mission to Seafarers in Bahrain giving care and welfare in 5 ports here in Bahrain.He is married to Jasmine and they are blessed with a daughter, Trypheana who is 10 yrs old.
